Rev. Dr. Brian Mundt
Brian grew up in the Twin Cities. He served in the Air Force for his “first career,” before serving as an ELCA Lutheran pastor in northwest Wisconsin and the Twin Cities. He retired from parish ministry in 2024.
His Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees were from Luther Seminary, in addition to two “practical” graduate degrees, courtesy of the Air Force.
He’s been on the “receiving end” of spiritual direction since 2001, and established his own practice in 2019, after completing the training through Christos Center. He joined Loyola in 2025. He’s also a small-group facilitator for Christos’ spiritual director training program.
He completed the Extended Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in 2006 and has since led others through. He completed the course in directing the Extended Ignatian Exercises through Sacred Ground in 2024.
Brian, his wife, and their border collie live in south Minneapolis.
“What is spiritual direction for me? A spiritual director is a companion on your journey through life with God. Our question here is always, ‘What is God up to here?’ Which is something we often forget to ask ourselves!
“A director’s primary role is to better facilitate one’s awareness of God and to deepen one’s relationship with God, such that we better understand where and how our story intersects with God’s story.
“That God is for you is certain, yet much of our daily interactions and decisions remain cloudy, obscure. When and how we do experience God often feels like we accidently stumble into it. Yet we can be more ‘accident prone’! Such core practices include Examen, Lectio Divina, and Centering Prayer, among others. I am conversant in Benedictine, Camaldolese, Carmelite, Ignatian, Taoist, and Zen Buddhist spiritualities.
“Through it all, God is for you.”
