Karen received her spiritual direction training at Christos Center for Spiritual Formation in Lino Lakes, MN, and her Masters of Divinity with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN. In addition to being a spiritual director with Loyola, Karen is a pastor at Shepherd of the Lake Lutheran Church, Prior Lake, MN, and a chaplain to McKenna Crossing, a senior living facility.
She is also a licensed Registered Nurse. Her practice of nursing has included Oncology and Hospice. Karen captures her time as a nurse in this specialty as an “honor and privilege.” Karen practiced ten years at Luther Seminary as their Parish Nurse/Faith Community Nurse. During this time, Karen encouraged members of the Luther community to care for their whole being, understanding spiritual well-being to encompass the whole of who we are.
Karen joined the Loyola community in 2015. Prior to this, Karen practiced spiritual direction at Luther Seminary, helping students and spouses to listen, breathe, and notice the presence of the Holy Spirit in an often overwhelming vocation.
Karen offers both individual and group spiritual direction. She would also welcome walking with others in the Ignatian Spiritual Exercise. Karen describes the Spiritual Exercises in this way, “When doing the Exercises, you are immersed in prayer and in God’s Word. Never are you more aware of God’s connection with you than in that time. It is truly life changing.”
Karen is married to her husband Ed who is also a pastor. Together they are raising four wonderful children. Karen finds joy in hiking with her family, biking with her husband and walking with her dog. Spiritual practice includes taking sacred time in the early hours of the day for contemplative prayer and reading.
